With June marking Men’s Health month, we’re leveraging our Health Intelligence platform to put a spotlight on all areas of men’s health and wellness data. To start, let’s look at some men’s health statistics:
- Heart disease is the No.1 leading cause of death in men
- While the average life expectancy in the United States is 78.8 years, the average life expectancy of men is 76.4 years
- Men are 24% less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year
- 33% of men over the age of 20 suffer from high blood pressure or high cholesterol
Why Men’s Health Month?
In knowing so many health issues men face are preventable, an employer’s goal is to help their employees prevent or detect conditions early through tailored plans. But even if your members are attending regular check-ups, that’s only one piece to the puzzle. In order to accurately measure and manage your population’s health, you need to go one layer deeper. That’s why the Springbuk Health Intelligence platform was built to go beyond just housing healthcare data. Health Intelligence helps gives you a snapshot of your data, bringing the most prevalent issues to the forefront and provides curated strategies unique to your population. To help harness the power of prevention in men’s health, we turned to our Health Strategy team to investigate trends and patterns that Health Intelligence identifies within the male members on our platform.
Here’s What Our Team Found:
Of the men currently on our platform, Health Intelligence identified that those without a preventative visit over the past two years have spent an average of $997 more on medical and Rx expenses in the last year than those with at least one visit. In knowing that men are 24% less likely to have visited a doctor in the past year, without an intelligent resource highlighting unengaged employees, employers have to go data digging in an attempt to understand what’s going on in their population. When employers can’t tailor plans to re-engage their members, their impact remains stagnant while employees continue to take advantage of time and healthcare coverage. And with the undeniable increase in irregular doctor visits and the impact on other conditions, our Health Intelligence platform can identify trends and curate strategies specific to your population’s needs.
Additionally, Health Intelligence found that of the male members on our platform, 24% are diagnosed with at least one chronic condition. Of the chronic conditions monitored, our platform identified hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), the top rising condition impacting male members, has moved from more commonly impacting the 18-35 to 36-49 age bracket.
By extending beyond traditional data warehousing and analytics, our platform helps unlock the potential of your data and maximize the value of your employee health investment. For example, within this data set, Springbuk surfaces a valuable insight: the timeline for men to prevent heart issues is extending. And when 33% of men above the age of 20 suffer from high blood pressure or high cholesterol, missed opportunities and wasted time are not an option.
