Wellness Program Highlights

At the end of 2018, Vitality and UnitedHealthcare (UHC)™ conducted an analysis on individuals who were a part of the Baylor College of Medicine benefits plan and had access to participate in the wellness program, BCM BeWell. This analysis only included medical claims data, not pharmacy data. Based on the reports, individuals who were highly engaged in the wellness program (number of activities completed and status achieved) saved $10 per member per month (PMPM) between 2016 and 2017. Those who did not participate, saw an almost $40 increase in PMPM costs between 2016 and 2017. Overall, the BCM BeWell program experienced a 217% ROI in 2017 based on the participants who were engaged in the program and costs towards implementing our wellness portal, Vitality. Currently, BCM BeWell is awaiting additional claims analysis for 2018 and is hoping to add pharmacy data to see complete cost savings.

Most Proud of ...

Since 2014, the BCM BeWell program has evolved into one of the top wellness programs in the nation. We have achieved success both within our business and through reducing healthcare costs. In order to have change at the highest level, we started with the individuals and focusing on their success. It takes drive and determination to take control of one’s health. People tell our team how they have reduced their risk by lowering their HbA1c, blood pressure, weight and how their physicians have lowered their medication because of their success. We have individuals with multiple sclerosis who report our yearly walking challenge keeps them motivated and feeling better every day. These individual stories drive us to do better for them and to continue to push resources that can help people “LiveWell, WorkWell, BeWell”.

“The Baylor College of Medicine BeWell program has educated our participants on their responsibilities to capitalize on healthy practices including the need for physical activity, nutritional choices, and participating in annual preventative screenings and biometric screenings to pinpoint any early-onset health issues. In 2017 and 2018, our health care plan costs were down over 6% each year when our actuaries predicted a 5-7% increase in claims. Upon examination of claims data for 2018, we found a clear pattern that our employees were practicing the principles of the BCM BeWell program by utilizing preventative tests at a 13% higher rate, avoiding the emergency room with 9% fewer visits, losing weight, and following sound nutritional practices.”
