A Deeper Look At Your Population’s GI Profile

Rx spend for GI diseases has increased 31.7% over the last three years, more than twice as fast as medical. In our 2025 Employee Health Trends report, the Springbuk team found that members with irritable bowel disease (IBD) are often high-cost claimants.

All Springbuk clients have a ready-made Gastrointestinal Disease Profile Report available in your Report Library. Use this report to understand your population’s GI cost trends, condition prevalence, spend by sources of care, prescription drug utilization, and more.

Understanding your population’s GI profile allows you to identify savings opportunities, such as lower-cost sites of care and drug alternatives.

Early Intervention Can Prevent High-Cost Admissions

Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines brought on by a virus or bacteria. It can quickly become acute for individuals with weakened immune systems, or if patients are unable to stay sufficiently hydrated.

Timely and effective outpatient care can prevent gastroenteritis from escalating and help patients avoid inpatient hospitalizations.

See whether your population has had avoidable admissions due to Gastroenteritis by visiting the Insights tab in the Springbuk platform.

Save by Switching to Biosimilars

Humira (adalimumab) and Remicade (Infliximab) are biologic drugs used in treatment of many autoimmune disorders, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Remicade is administered by IV infusion in an outpatient hospital setting, while Humira is administered at-home via subcutaneous injection by the patient.

Switching from biologics to biosimilars covered through the Rx channel (instead of medical) can lead to significant savings for employers. On average, biosimilars cost 30% less than the reference product.

See if there are opportunities for Humira and Remicade savings by going to the Insights tab in the Springbuk platform.

Insight: GI symptoms are often hidden due to stigma.

Insight: GI symptoms are often hidden or downplayed due to stigma. Many employees delay care out of embarrassment or fear of being misunderstood, which can lead to more severe outcomes. Insight: Preventive screenings reduce long-term health risks and costs.

Colon cancer is highly preventable and treatable when caught early, yet screening rates remain low—especially among younger adults and underserved populations.

Screening Guidelines (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force): Begin at age 45 (earlier with risk factors)

Options:

  • At-home stool tests (every 1–3 years)
  • Colonoscopy (every 10 years)
  • Sigmoidoscopy or CT colonography (every 5 years)
Actionable Opportunity: Amplify screening efforts by making resources visible, accessible, and rewarding. To boost participation:
  • Offer wellness incentives (gift cards, PTO, HSA contributions)
  • Mail at-home test kits through vendors
  • Host on-site screening events
  • Share reminders, success stories, and FAQs via email, intranet, and social channels

Impacting over 12% of members and costing $31.70 PMPM—with IBD alone at $14.91—conditions like IBD, reflux, and hernias are rising in both prevalence and cost, driven largely by high-cost specialty drugs.
